Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a counseling session and what should I expect?

Counseling sessions last 50 – 60 minutes. The session is a conversation between you and Debbie as she listens to you and gets to know you. It is a time set aside for you to focus on your thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Debbie spends some time teaching her clients about issues to help them develop more insight into their thoughts and behaviors. She also teaches deep relaxation and mindfulness to most of her clients to reduce stress and help them learn to relax. Debbie will work with you to figure out what is working, what could use some adjustments, and what just simply needs to be discarded. Debbie helps clients learn to take better care of themselves. People are often amazed at how quickly they can begin to experience positive feelings and changes in behavior that produce clarity, strength and hope. It is possible to feel better after the very first session.

How much does it cost?

More than likely, you are covered for mental health services through your health insurance. Counseling is much more affordable than most people realize with many co-pays being between $10 – 30. Debbie is a provider for Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, CIGNA, MedCost, UMR, and United Healthcare as well as several EAP companies, and she can file insurance claims for you. You will be responsible for the co-pay and any deductibles that apply. Debbie can file other insurance claims as well, but she would be considered an out-of-network provider and you might have to reach a higher deductible before the insurance company begins to cover visits. You can call your health insurance company and find out the details of your particular insurance coverage. If you have a high deductible or do not wish to use your insurance, individual sessions are $100 and couple sessions are $130. Please bring your insurance card with you to your session, as well as any authorization numbers you have been given.  You may pay by cash, check or debit/credit card.

How long do I come to counseling?

How long people spend in counseling depends on several different factors. Most people can see positive results within 6 – 8 sessions, and this may be all they need. Others realize that there are long-standing patterns they want to change and continue counseling for months and sometimes years. Some people come for a while to work on a particular problem, stop counseling, and return when they want to work on another issue. There are many different ways to utilize and benefit from counseling, and we will work together to set and reach your goals.

What if I need medicine?

Medicine can be helpful for some individuals. Your primary care physician or a psychiatrist can assess your need for medication. We can talk about medication during your visit and decide what approach is best for you.
